How Long Does It Take to Learn Python, and When Should You Start Applying for Jobs?

There's no one magic number that fits everyone, but here are realistic estimates based on actual practice hours, not just time enrolled.

  • Basics (variables, conditionals, loops, functions): one to two months with consistent daily practice.
  • Intermediate level (data structures, OOP, small projects): an additional two to three months.
  • Actually job-ready: usually 6-9 months, with 2-3 real projects in your portfolio, not just a course-completion certificate.

The real sign of readiness isn't how many months passed, but whether you can build a small project from scratch without following a step-by-step tutorial video. Once you reach that point, start applying — don't wait for "perfect".
