Common Mistakes When Reviewing Math for Technical Fields

Reviewing math for a technical (not purely academic) purpose has different common mistakes than traditional academic study.

  • Memorizing formulas without understanding the underlying idea, making it hard to apply them in a new context.
  • Trying to cover every branch of math instead of focusing on what actually serves your target field.
  • Not solving enough exercises, settling for watching a solved example instead of trying it yourself.
  • Not connecting a math concept to its practical use (e.g., why probability specifically matters in machine learning).

The best way to make it stick: after every math concept, ask yourself "where will I actually use this?" and find a real applied example.
