How Long Does It Take to Become a Professional Penetration Tester?

Ethical hacking is an advanced path usually built on top of general cybersecurity fundamentals, so its timeline is relatively longer.

  • Networking, OS, and general security fundamentals: three to four months with no prior background.
  • Penetration testing methodology + practice on TryHackMe/HackTheBox: two to three more months.
  • A specialized certification (like OSCP) for full job-market readiness: about three more months of intensive preparation.

The realistic total is about 8-10 months from zero, which is entirely normal for a field that demands both deep technical skill and serious legal and ethical responsibility.
