A Beginner's Guide to Getting into Cybersecurity
The biggest mistake beginners make is jumping straight into hacking tools before understanding the basics that explain how those tools actually work.
- Start with networking fundamentals: TCP/IP protocols, DNS, and how data moves between machines.
- Learn operating system basics, especially Linux, since most security tools run on it.
- Then move to core security concepts: encryption, firewalls, permission management.
- Practice on safe, legal platforms like TryHackMe before considering any real-world testing.
Cybersecurity is a very broad field (defensive, offensive, compliance auditing); don't lock in your final specialty until you've tried the basics of more than one branch.
